The Ontario Winter Games are set to resume in Thunder Bay this weekend, following a successful kick-off weekend. The event, which is split into two weekends, will feature a fresh lineup of sports from Saturday to Monday.
Weekend two brings a variety of competitions to the city, including 5-pin bowling, archery, artistic swimming, biathlon, curling, fencing, and hockey. Organizers, pleased with the initial turnout and reception, anticipate minor adjustments for the upcoming events.
One highlight from the first weekend was the unexpected turnout of spectators, showing support for the athletes across various venues. This enthusiasm is not only encouraging for the participants but also beneficial for the sporting organizations involved.
Shane Baker from Lakehead Archers noted an increase in interest in archery following the games’ announcement, hoping for a surge in participation due to the exposure.
Neil Lumsden, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, emphasized the invaluable experience the games provide for athletes, regardless of their placement. Drawing from his own sporting background, Lumsden highlighted the importance of competition and adaptability in sports.
Successfully hosting such an event can pave the way for future opportunities for Thunder Bay and other cities, showcasing their capability to manage large-scale sporting events and adapt to changing circumstances.
